DID YOU KNOW THAT SA HAS THE HIGHEST FASD STATS IN THE WORLD!
Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is caused by exposing an unborn child to alcohol during pregnancy and impacts on their physical, behavioural and cognitive development. Research from 2017 identified that the prevalence of FASD was 8 per 1000 children globally, however, in South Africa, the national prevalence ranges from 29 to 290 per 1000 live births in different communities across the country. This Courage video outlines some of the child protection challenges we need to be aware of as parents, educators, community members and child protection officers, which span crisis pregnancy, maternal health and alcohol abuse.
WHAT IS THE STATE OF CHILD PROTECTION IN South Africa
In the recent Children's Act Amendment Hearings, taking place in May 2021, questions were asked about the state of child protection in South Africa and the relevance of Adoption as a strategy to care for our orphaned, abandoned and vulnerable children. Courage developed this video to explore the issue at hand. In the original Power-Point Presentation below you can find all of the references for the facts stated in the video in the notes pages.
